Beginner Roadmap

Build the Right Stock-Market Foundation

Stock Market Basics brings together the concepts a new investor should understand before moving to account opening, company analysis or chart reading. The path begins with the stock market and share ownership, then explains exchanges, indices, price discovery, market capitalisation, share classes, market cycles, investing, trading and the participants who make the market work.

Follow the lessons in sequence if you are starting from zero, or open the guide that answers your immediate question. Use the calculators only after you understand the underlying concept: a result can measure a transaction, but it cannot decide whether a share is suitable for you.

Stock Market Basics FAQs

What should a complete beginner learn first?

Start with what the stock market is and what owning a share means. Then learn about exchanges, indices, price discovery and market capitalisation before comparing investing with trading.

Is the stock market the same as a stock exchange?

No. The stock market is the broader system of issuers, investors, securities, intermediaries and trading activity. A stock exchange is an organised marketplace within that system.

Do beginners need both a Demat and a trading account?

For normal exchange-based share investing in India, the trading account handles orders and the Demat account holds eligible securities electronically after settlement.

Can a calculator tell me which stock to buy?

No. A calculator can estimate values such as return or average cost from your inputs, but it cannot assess suitability, business quality, valuation, risk or future performance.
